The Art of Connection

The Art of Connection

Have you ever walked into a place & sat down next to someone that you ended up connecting with almost immediately on a deeper level? Where the conversation was easy, you could communicate in a way that you felt seen and heard & you leave the conversation with a smile on your face, and joy in your heart knowing you made a “bossom friend” type of connection (Anne Shirley, Anne of Green Gables reference for all the book lovers out there ;)) that you will never forget?! Aren’t those just the best types of conversations!!?

My beautiful new friend Aylin, I met during our Mediterranean cruise last summer

I’ve had this type of experience several times, usually while I’m traveling and I find someone who shares similar interests, viewpoints/beliefs and can appreciate the differences we have as well. I love meeting new people, especially when they’re as passionate about exploring the world as I am. There’s a kindredness there that is often hard to find in those who never travel. Sadly, the latter can’t usually relate which can make it difficult to connect on a deeper level. When I share about an experience, the way I felt looking at an incredivbe view, sharing about the amazing food and people I’ve met and the things I fell in love with about the location with someone who’s had similar experiences it’s so refreshing to know that they get it. They truly understand what I’m describing on a deeper level than someone who has never done those things and can’t properly envision it because they have no frame of reference for them. Similarly, when I read books based on locations I’ve already been to I can instantly picture the places the author is describing and connect deeper with a story because I’m able to visualize the location, destination or experience that they’re writing about. I can relate with the story on a personal level because I’ve been there or done similar activities etc. Those things make it easier to deeply feel connected and rooted to a place and create special memories and a bond with people who share the same experiences and viewpoint.

When I visit a new destination I love to stay in an airbnb, it’s one of the best ways to immerse myself in the location and “live like a local” during my stay. Meeting with the host is a great way to learn the lay of the land and get some recommendations for local spots to visit. I like to pop over to a local shop/cafe to grab a bite or coffee & chat with locals a bit to learn more about the area, foods/drinks I must try, suggestions for places to visit, learn about cultural insights/their customs, traditions, favorite sights, restaurants and recommendations for activities or experiences not to miss in the destination. It’s an excellent way to glean inside tips for lesser known locations and hidden gems and a wonderful way to build new connections and create new friendships.

What about you, do you like to chat with the locals when you travel? How do you make connections like these when you travel? I’d love to hear about them in the comments!

Until next time, happy travels~
