Big Sur highlights

Some of the most iconic views along the California coastline can be found along the scenic Big Sur Byway, Hwy 1 corridor. Epic beaches with endless waves and aquamarine coves, jaw dropping views, miles and miles of winding highway weaving between stunning cliffs and gorgeous views, historic bridges, quaint untouched coastal towns and some of the most intriguing natural wonders located in Central California can be found in Big Sur.

For anyone searching for a slice of heaven, Big Sur definitely fits the bill. Everywhere you cast your eyes they’ll land on a beautiful sight. Some of the best views, beaches and landmarks you’ll want to add to your list I have compiled for you below. You’ll find all my recommendations in the 2 day & 4 day itineraries & full map with recommendations available here:

Traveling along this section of hwy 1 is a real treat. Especially on a beautiful sunny day when you’re able to leisurely cruise along making pitstops whenever you please. Imagine cruising along one of the most scenic routes in the USA without a care in the world. Stopping wherever you please and as often as you like. The Big Sur hwy will captivate you, leave you feeling in awe and connected with nature. I recommend planning at least 2 days to drive the length of the hwy and to plan on a leisurely slow pace in order to fully take everything in. I also suggest leaving some wiggle room in your plans for the rare gems that you discover along the way that you may end up spending more time at than you originally alloted for. Keeping an open mind, loose schedule and allowing yourself to relax & go with the flow will ensure you have the most incredible time.

A few highlights to look for and anticipate:

Discovery of new favorite destinations. Endless natural beauty, serene and peaceful hidden beaches, countless photo ops, connection and converstion with your travel buddies. Feelings of tranquility, connection with nature, awe & wonder, joy, release of tension, sense of peace and lots of wanderlust.

Top 5 recommendations:

  1. Plan to begin your trip at the northernmost part of Big Sur Scenic byway & start in the charming city of Carmel-by-the Sea. It is one of the cutest and most adorable seaside cities I’ve ever visited. You’ll love the quaint shops, delicious eats, beautiful architecture & the charm of the city. Just a short 20 minute drive from Monterey and the world famous 17 mile drive (*which I recommend as well if time allows in your schedule)
  2. Point Lobos State Nature Reserve is just a few miles down the road from Carmel and the perfect place to begin your Big Sur itinerary. You’ll want to do some nature walks & hikes in this area to truly appreciate the natural surroundings. See above for links to the 2 or 4 day itinerary with recommended hikes and sights to add to your list.
  3. Numerous stunning beaches, overlooks and panoramic viewpoints dot the highway with several being accessible only from a tiny pull off along the highway. It’s best to take this route slowly so you don’t miss the small sections to pull over and appreciate the view. *The highway has several spots that you can pull over, however accessing them from both sides of the highway can be very difficult and not advisable in many locations due to the narrowness of the highway etc. One that I highly recommend is the world famous Bixby Bridge. It can be accessed best while heading south as there is a larger parking area, access from the south (heading North) is limited and not recommended if the small parking area is full. See itinerary links above for more recommendations.
  4. Plan to pack snacks, beverages, plenty of sunblock & layers for your adventure. There are limited locations to stop for food/drinks so please plan ahead. A picnic at one of the beaches or overlooks adds to the magic of Big Sur. Discover your favorite spot, layout your blanket or towels and enjoy the tranquility while you sip your favorite beverage and enjoy a tasty treat. It can cool off quickly in the evening & be chilly in the mornings so I highly recommend brining layers to best enjoy your road trip.
  5. Keep an eye out for small pullout/gravel areas on side of highway. Often times these lead to the best views and many times you’ll have it all to yourself. *Enjoy a slow paced ride along this scenic corridor, it is best enjoyed at a relaxed/un-rushed pace.

Until next time, happy adventuring!
