Crete: Myths, Mountains & Mediterranean Charm

Greece Is More Than Just a Destination mini series: Part II

After the wonder of Mykonos, we continued our journey through the Greek isles with a sense of awe still lingering in our hearts. Our next stop was the island of Crete — Greece’s largest island and one steeped in myth, mountains, and irresistible Mediterranean charm.

What unfolded next was a collection of quiet moments, scenic beauty, and living history that reminded me, once again, that Greece isn’t just a destination — it’s a feeling.

A Morning Above the World – Aptera & Souda Bay

We began our time in Crete at Aptera, an ancient city perched high above Souda Bay. The view alone was worth the trip — sweeping vistas of olive groves, rolling hills, and the glistening blue bay stretched out like a painting below us. There was a stillness there, one that made you feel like time had paused just long enough to take in the grandeur of this island.

Walking among the ruins of Aptera — remnants of temples, cisterns, and stone walls from civilizations long gone — was humbling. It reminded me that Crete holds centuries of stories in its soil. And if you pause to listen, it has a way of speaking to your soul.

Coastal Calm in Georgioupolis

From there, we made our way to Georgioupolis, a small seaside town tucked within the region of Chania. This charming village felt like stepping into a slower rhythm of life — the kind that lets you breathe deeply and exhale fully.

We walked down to visit two sandy beaches, where the waves kissed the shore gently and the breeze carried the scent of salt and sun. It was peaceful and grounding — a moment of stillness in the middle of an adventure. The small St. Nicholas chapel built in the middle of a tiny rock inlet nestled between both bays was a fun surprise and unique find.

Gavalochori — A Hidden Gem

For our next stop we ventured inland to Gavalochori, a picturesque village surrounded by a lush, green landscape. The rolling hills and olive-dotted scenery looked like something out of a storybook. Here, nature whispered in every breeze and the simple beauty of the land seemed to wrap around us like a soft shawl.

We wandered the quiet streets, browsed a few local shops, and strolled through the main square where locals chatted over coffee. We joined them at a cozy taverna café, where we sipped delicious, strong Greek coffee and watched the world go by.

Gavalochori offered us a glimpse of the “other” Crete — the one less traveled, but no less stunning.

Old Town Chania — Where the Past Still Breathes

Our final stop was in Old Town Chania, and it felt like stepping into a living painting. As we approached the ancient stone walls that still encircle the city, the air filled with the scent of spices, sea air, and something sweet drifting from nearby bakeries.

The town unfolded in a maze of cobblestone streets, Venetian-inspired houses, and brightly painted buildings that climbed over one another like seashells on a shoreline. Portions of the ancient Venetian wall still stood watch over the port, as if guarding the stories of centuries past.

The old lighthouse and fort stood proudly at the entrance of the bay, where hundreds of boats floated on aquamarine waters. The sound of Greek music and guitars filled the air, setting the tone for an afternoon of wandering, tasting, and simply being.

We explored hidden alleyways, peeked into ornate churches, and browsed local shops brimming with handmade treasures and colorful textiles.

And, of course, no day would be complete without sampling a few more sweet indulgences — creamy gelato and a cup of fresh-squeezed orange juice that somehow tasted like sunshine in a glass.

As the sun dipped lower over the harbor, we slowly made our way back to our ship, hearts full and hands sticky with citrus and gelato.

More Than Just a Place on the Map

Crete surprised me. It wasn’t loud or flashy. It didn’t need to be.

It’s beauty lay in the contrast — between sea and mountain, old and new, myth and moment.

Each town offered something different: the silence of ancient ruins, the charm of a village café, the vibrancy of a Venetian port city. And together, they formed a mosaic of memories that I’ll treasure forever.

Because, like every place we touched on this journey, Crete reminded me that travel isn’t just about where you go. It’s about what wakes up inside of you when you’re there.
