Greece Is More Than Just a Destination – Part IV
If Mykonos dazzled with charm, Crete impressed with history, and Zakynthos stunned with nature — then Corfu brought grace. With its romantic hills, Venetian rooftops, and views that seemed to be airbrushed into place, Corfu felt like stepping into an oil painting — one brushed with elegance, color, and calm.
Corfu Town – Venetian Elegance & Timeless Charm
Our first glimpse of Corfu was observing the mighty towering fortress, viewable from multiple locations as you approach Corfu Town. The fortress, once a guardian of the city, still watches proudly over Corfu Town (Kerkyra), a place where Venetian elegance meets vibrant Greek spirit. The Palace of St. Micheal and St. George also caught our attention with its stunning architecture, wrought iron gate, statues and obvious historical importance.
Located halfway down the island’s east coast, Corfu Town immediately captivated me with its pastel buildings, winding cobblestone lanes, and aristocratic air. The name “Corfu” comes from the Greek Korypho — meaning “peaks” — a nod to the island’s twin hilltop fortresses. You feel that elevated grandeur in every direction, from the ancient walls to the sunlit balconies overflowing with bougainvillea.
There’s a rhythm to Corfu Town that’s all its own — the sound of church bells echoing through the alleyways, laughter spilling out of cafés, and the soft scent of citrus and fresh bread carried on the breeze. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t just impress you — it invites you to slow down, linger, and let it sink in.

Treasures Worth Taking Home
I’ll admit — I’m usually only looking for specific types of souvenirs (a few postcards, jewelry, a Starbucks “you are here mug” (we love to collect them during our travels) and small/flat items that won’t take up much space in my luggage). But Corfu surprised me yet again. Instead of generic trinkets, the shops throughout Corfu Town were filled with authentic, local treasures — olive wood carvings, handmade ceramics, and sweet kumquat treats (a local delicacy unique to Corfu). Everything felt thoughtfully crafted and deeply rooted in place. My favorite find was a deep teal colored, hand made leather bag with beautiful details. My husband picked up a leather belt with traditional Greek details embossed into the leather. We also snagged unique handpainted ornaments with Greek scenes perfect to adorn our Christmas tree.
If you’re visiting Corfu and considering a souvenir, this is the place to find something meaningful.

A Taste of Corfu – Sweet, Spirited & Surprising
From the heart of town, we ventured off to one of Corfu’s most unique local experiences — a visit to Koum Quat Mavromatis, the island’s beloved distillery. Here, nestled among citrus groves and sunshine, we learned the art of transforming the tiny, tart kumquat into something extraordinary.
We sampled kumquat wine, limoncello, ouzo, and amaretto, each sip capturing the spirit of Corfu in liquid form — sweet, bold, and beautifully unexpected. The tasting table overflowed with local delights: candied kumquats that burst with citrusy joy, freshly baked biscuits served with kumquat marmalade, and warm bread dipped in kumquat-infused olive oil.
The entire experience was both delicious and fascinating — a sensory journey into how something so small and unassuming could become such a treasured island specialty. It was a reminder that the flavors of a place can tell stories just as vividly as its landscapes.

A Glimpse of Paleokastritsa – Beaches, Blues & Barefoot Joy
Before ascending into the hills, we made a memorable stop in Paleokastritsa, one of Corfu’s most iconic coastal areas. Nestled between lush green cliffs and sapphire waters, this stretch of shoreline is home to some of the island’s most stunning beaches — and it’s easy to see why it has captivated travelers for generations.
We paused at Agios Petros Beach, where I couldn’t resist slipping off my shoes and wading into the Ionian Sea. There’s something sacred about that first connection with the water — the cool, clear waves curling over your toes, the sun warm on your skin, and the sound of the tide lapping against the rocks. Just a few barefoot moments, but they linger in the memory like sunlight on the surface of the sea.
From there, we continued on to catch a glimpse of Agios Spiridon Beach, its crescent-shaped bay glowing in the morning light. The views were postcard-worthy — cliffs plunging into cobalt water, boats bobbing gently in hidden coves, and every turn offering a new angle of beauty.

Lakones – A Village Above the World
From the coastline, we wound our way upward toward Lakones, a traditional mountain village perched 182 meters above Paleokastritsa Bay. The road twisted and turned like a ribbon draped along the cliffs — narrow, dramatic, and absolutely worth it.
On the way, we stopped for gelato at the Golden Fox, a charming little spot with panoramic views that could rival any postcard. Sweet treat in hand, we took in the view from the nearby Bella Vista Viewpoint, one of the most breathtaking lookouts on the island. From here, the entire coastline unfolded below us — deep green hills tumbling into turquoise water, dotted with boats and beaches like brushstrokes on a canvas. At Bella Vista Café, we paused to soak it all in — a peaceful moment of stillness above the world, overlooking the sapphire coast and emerald hills below.
This was one of those soul-stilling moments you don’t plan for — the kind that simply happens when a place aligns with your spirit.

Why Corfu Stayed With Me
More than any single sight, what I’ll remember most about Corfu is how it made me feel — elevated. Not just physically, from the hilltop views or fortress heights, but emotionally and spiritually. It invited me to look up, breathe deeply, and move a little more slowly. To taste, see, and feel life more vividly.
Greece isn’t just a place you go. It’s a place that goes with you.
And Corfu — with its elegance, color, and layers of history and flavor — is now forever part of mine.
