Montenegro – Mountains, Myths & Mesmerizing Beauty

Greece Is More Than Just a Destination – mini series Part V

While the Greek Isles stirred my soul, Montenegro took my breath away.

As our ship glided into the Bay of Kotor, it felt like we had left reality behind and stepped into the pages of a fantasy novel — or maybe a living fairytale. Jagged, towering mountains rose straight out of the sea, wrapped in morning mist and kissed by golden light. The Baltic-blue water shimmered below, calm and still, as if protecting a secret.

I pressed my face to the window in awe. This wasn’t just a port stop — this was otherworldly.

A Steep Climb to Njeguši Village

We boarded a bus and wound our way up Mountain Lovćen on the famous narrow, serpentine road, climbing higher and higher through some of the most stunning viewpoints along the Montenegrin coast. Each turn in the road revealed a new breathtaking angle — forested slopes, glimpses of stone villages below, the sea stretching endlessly in the distance.

As we reached the 25th corner our bus stopped and the stunning landscape captivated me at the first glance. It was impossible to take it all in. The magnificent view literally left me speachless and feeling like I was on top of the world. Laid out before us was an endless expanse of majestic mountains, the ancient city of Kotor and the brilliant blue Ionian & Balkan seas. It was to beautiful for words, being there felt like an out of body experience where time stopped and nothing else existed but the present moment. Montenegro etched itself in my heart and soul. Standing there soaking in the beauty left a huge impression on me, one I’ll never forget.

Eventually, we reached the village of Njeguši, a tiny mountain hamlet famous for its traditional foods and deep-rooted heritage. With charming stone homes, flower-filled gardens, and the scent of smoke and bread in the air, it felt untouched by time.

We gathered for a traditional tasting of local specialties — smoked ham, fresh cheese, warm homemade bread, and a glass of the most delicious Montenegrin honey wine that was as smooth as the scenery. It was rustic, sweet, and deeply comforting — food that tells a story of land and tradition.

Budva Riviera — From Old World to Summer Escape

From the mountains, we descended toward the coast once more, arriving at Budva, one of Montenegro’s most popular summer destinations. It felt like a blend of modern resort energy and old-world charm — cobbled streets lined with seaside cafés, shops, and beachgoers soaking in the sun.

We had time to explore on our own and enjoy a relaxed lunch, but truthfully, my mind kept wandering back to those quiet moments in the mountains — to the stillness of the cliffs and the old village charm of Njeguši.

Walking the Storybook Streets of Kotor

We ended our day with a gentle walking tour through Kotor, the ancient coastal town surrounded by stone walls and crowned with history. Narrow alleyways twisted like veins through medieval buildings, and cats lounged in every sunny square (Kotor is famously known for them — and I couldn’t get enough!).

Everywhere you looked there was a story: bell towers, carved archways, centuries-old chapels, and balconies dressed in vines and drying laundry.

It felt both ancient and alive — like a place where time drifts more slowly, and beauty hides in quiet corners. We were immediately captivated by the mystical appeal and charm of the city. The stone fortress and cobbled streets tucked beneath giant stone walls that surround the ancient city reminded us of scenes in LOTR & left us both entirely enchanted with Kotor.

Montenegro Left Us Spellbound

It’s hard to put into words just how enchanted I felt.

Montenegro didn’t just impress me — it mesmerized me.

From mountain peaks to seaside villages, smoky taverns to harbor views, it reminded me that the real magic of travel is in how a place makes you feel — not just in the photos you bring back, but in the wonder that lingers long after you’ve gone.

If Greece woke something in my soul, Montenegro stirred the dreamer in me.
