How I Plan My Travel Outfits and Avoid Overpacking

Packing used to be the most overwhelming part of preparing for a trip.

I’d stand over an open suitcase wondering if I had packed too much… or not enough.

Over time I created a simple method that helps me pack lighter while still having outfits I love wearing during the trip.

Here’s exactly how I do it.

1. I Start With a Capsule Wardrobe

Before choosing outfits, I build a small travel capsule wardrobe. These are versatile pieces that mix and match easily.

Typical pieces might include:

Neutral pants or skirt

Comfortable walking shoes

A dress that can be dressed up or down

Lightweight layers

A scarf or jacket

This creates the foundation for multiple outfits without packing excessive clothing.

2. I Try On Every Outfit Combination

Once I’ve chosen my capsule pieces, I try on every outfit combination.

This allows me to:

See how the outfits actually look

Make sure everything fits comfortably

Ensure all pieces coordinate well

It also helps eliminate pieces that don’t work as well as expected.

3. I Photograph Each Outfit

After trying on an outfit, I take a quick photo.

I upload the photos into

Acloset

so I can easily reference the outfits during the trip.

Seeing the outfit visually makes it much easier to decide what to wear each day.

4. I Write Notes for Each Outfit

For each outfit I make a note of:

Accessories

Shoes

Layers

Special pieces

I tuck these notes into the pocket of my outfits or suitcase so I can quickly reference them if needed.

5. I Plan Outfits Based on Activities & use a planning app to keep me organized

Each outfit is loosely planned around what I expect to be doing that day.

For example:

Exploring a village

Visiting historic landmarks

Travel day outfits

Dinner outfits

I also leave room for flexibility in case the weather changes. Then I upload each item to the Whering App and use the app to create my outfits, organize them into categories and save to a calendar for easy reference.

6. I Pack Outfits Into Packing Cubes

Once the outfits are finalized, I pack them into packing cubes.

Sometimes I pack one outfit per cube.

Other times I group multiple outfits in a cube but keep them organized so they’re easy to access.

This makes unpacking simple and prevents digging through the suitcase each morning.

7. I Keep One Backup Option

I always include one flexible outfit that can swap in if weather or plans change.

This keeps my suitcase light while still providing a little flexibility.

Final Thoughts

Packing doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.

With a little planning and organization, it’s possible to pack intentionally and avoid bringing things you’ll never wear.

And when everything is planned ahead of time, travel mornings become much simpler.

Which means more time to enjoy the experience & the journey.

Until next time, happy adventuring!
