There are certain trips that feel less like a vacation… and more like stepping into another version of yourself.
The kind of journey where reality softens around the edges, your worries grow quieter, and life suddenly feels cinematic again.
That’s exactly how this 14-day road trip through Germany’s Romantic Road, Bavaria, and Austria felt for me.
For two weeks, we wandered through medieval towns, stood beneath fairytale castles, chased alpine views, explored abbeys overflowing with history, tasted warm apple strudel in charming cafés, and drove winding roads framed by mountains and storybook villages.
And somehow, even after visiting 11 countries, 45 U.S. states, and countless beautiful places over the years… this trip still managed to leave me completely speechless.
Why This Trip Meant So Much
Travel has always been more than “just travel” for me. As a homeschool mom for 12 years, so much of my life has revolved around caring for others, managing responsibilities, and simply trying to hold everything together through incredibly difficult seasons. After surviving years of domestic abuse — both for myself and my children — life over the past decade often became centered around survival, healing, rebuilding, and creating peace after chaos. Travel became one of the few places where we could truly breathe again, escape the weight of everyday life for a little while, and create beautiful new memories as a family after so many painful ones. That’s part of why this trip felt especially meaningful. Because for two weeks, on this girls trip through Germany and Austria, I was able to step outside of my normal responsibilities and fully embrace adventure, beauty, spontaneity, and wonder again.
There’s something healing about standing in the middle of the Alps, wandering cobblestone streets untouched by time, or watching the sunset over a medieval town while realizing life can still hold beauty after hardship. This trip reminded me of that again and again. It felt like living inside the pages of a fairytale.

Beginning Our Journey Along Germany’s Romantic Road
Our adventure began in the beautiful city of Würzburg, one of the gateways to Germany’s famous Romantic Road.
The city instantly swept us in with its baroque architecture, charming streets, and lively atmosphere along the Main River. But one of the true highlights was visiting the breathtaking Würzburg Residence (Würzburg Palace).
Walking through the palace felt surreal. The grand staircases, ornate ceilings, gilded rooms, and endless detail were almost overwhelming in the best possible way. Every room looked like it belonged in a period drama or historical film.
I kept thinking: Europe really knows how to romanticize life.
And honestly? That’s one of the things I love most about traveling here.
Even ordinary moments somehow feel magical.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber: A Real-Life Fairytale
If someone asked me to picture the definition of a storybook town, I would immediately think of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
Colorful half-timbered houses. Cobblestone streets. Flower boxes overflowing from windows. Medieval towers surrounding the town.
It felt like walking through a movie set.
Every corner looked impossibly picturesque, and no matter how many photos or videos I took, it still didn’t fully capture how magical it felt in person.
This was one of those places where I wanted to slow down and soak in every detail:
- wandering the old town walls,
- exploring tiny shops,
- stopping for pastries and coffee,
- watching the golden light hit the buildings in the evening.
It’s the kind of destination that makes you want to romanticize your life a little more.

Castles, Medieval Towns & Hidden Gems
As we continued along the Romantic Road, the fairytale atmosphere only intensified.
We stopped at Harburg Castle, dramatically perched above the town below. Standing inside centuries-old castle walls always makes me pause and think about how many lives, stories, and moments these places have witnessed over time.
Then came Nördlingen — one of the few medieval towns in Germany with its city wall still completely intact. Walking through it felt like stepping backward in time.
And Dinkelsbühl may have been one of the most underrated stops of the entire trip.
Colorful buildings, peaceful streets, and hardly any crowds compared to some of the more famous destinations. It felt authentic, calm, and incredibly charming.
Those quieter destinations often end up becoming some of my favorites.

Wiblingen Abbey: Pure Elegance
One thing I didn’t expect on this trip was how much the abbeys and monasteries would completely captivate me.
Wiblingen Abbey was stunning beyond words.
The library alone looked like something straight out of Beauty and the Beast — ornate details, soft colors, endless books, and ceilings that looked like works of art.
I could have spent hours there just taking everything in.
There’s something about Europe’s historic churches, abbeys, and libraries that feels deeply inspiring creatively. As someone who loves storytelling, photography, videography, and preserving memories, places like this awaken something in me.

The Moment I Finally Saw Neuschwanstein Castle
And then came the moment I had dreamed about for years.
Neuschwanstein Castle.
The castle that inspired Disney.
The castle I had seen in photos countless times.
Yet somehow nothing prepared me for seeing it in real life.
Nestled among the Bavarian Alps near Schwangau, it honestly looked unreal emerging through the mountains and mist.
And just nearby sat the equally beautiful Hohenschwangau Castle, glowing golden against the surrounding landscape.
This entire area felt like peak fairytale Europe.
We explored the charming town of Füssen, wandered lakeside paths, admired alpine scenery, and truly embraced the slower pace for a few days.
I think this part of the trip especially awakened my “travel self” — the version of me that feels adventurous, carefree, inspired, and fully alive.
The version that somehow walks 20,000+ steps without complaint, lives in dresses and cute outfits, and forgets stress exists for a little while.
Travel has a funny way of bringing that version of ourselves back to life.

Linderhof Palace & Bavarian Dreams
Visiting Linderhof Palace felt like stepping into pure extravagance.
The palace and grounds were absolutely breathtaking, surrounded by lush mountains and elaborate gardens.
King Ludwig II clearly understood the assignment when it came to creating fantasy worlds.
Honestly, Bavaria as a whole feels designed for dreamers:
- castles tucked into mountains,
- alpine villages,
- winding scenic roads,
- flower-covered balconies,
- dramatic landscapes around every corner.
It’s impossible not to feel inspired there.

Crossing Into Austria
Leaving Germany and entering Austria somehow made the scenery even more dramatic.
Suddenly we were surrounded by towering mountains, emerald lakes, and the kind of landscapes that make you stare out the car window in disbelief.
Our first major stop was Salzburg, and I completely understood why so many people fall in love with it.
The city felt elegant, musical, historic, and cinematic all at once.
And as someone who grew up loving The Sound of Music, there was something surreal about finally experiencing these places in person.

Mondsee, Bad Ischl & Hallstatt
From Salzburg we explored several smaller Austrian towns that completely stole my heart.
Mondsee was peaceful and postcard-perfect, with its famous church and stunning lake views.
Bad Ischl felt charming and sophisticated — one of those places where you can imagine historical figures vacationing during another era.
And then there was Hallstatt.
Yes, it’s popular.
Yes, it’s heavily photographed.
And yes… it really is that beautiful.
Seeing Hallstatt tucked between the lake and mountains felt almost unreal. Early mornings and evenings are especially magical, when the crowds soften and the village becomes quieter. The most unique views are found from lake Hallstattersee, a ride on a ferry or a small boat tour provides some incredibly scenic photo ops.
Nearby Gosau, the tiny little village where we stayed for a few nights, gave us some of the most breathtaking alpine scenery of the entire trip.
The mountains there genuinely looked painted. It was breathtaking.

Austria’s Incredible Abbeys
Another major highlight of the trip was exploring Austria’s historic abbeys.
Admont Abbey completely amazed me with its stunning library — bright, ornate, and almost impossibly beautiful. The best part was that I had arranged for an exclusive opportunity to enjoy the abbey prior to opening for the day. This meant we were able to wander and gaze upon the beauty of this magnificent library completely uninterupted for over an hour. It was truly the highlight of the entire trip!
Then came Melk Abbey, towering above the Danube River in spectacular fashion.
The abbey itself was magnificent, but the surrounding town of Melk also felt incredibly charming and peaceful.
By this point in the trip, I found myself slowing down more intentionally.
Not rushing.
Not worrying.
Just absorbing the beauty, sights, sounds and environment around me.

Ending in Vienna
Our final major stop was Vienna.
And what a way to end the trip.
Vienna felt grand, elegant, artistic, and deeply historic. Everywhere we turned there were beautiful buildings, cafés, palaces, gardens, and reminders of the city’s imperial past.
I could easily spend weeks there.
Walking through Vienna at night especially felt magical — the glowing architecture, classical music drifting through streets, horse-drawn carriages, beautifully dressed people dining outdoors.
It felt timeless.

What This Trip Gave Me
This road trip gave me more than beautiful photos and videos.
It gave me:
- inspiration,
- peace,
- joy,
- connection,
- healing,
- creativity,
- and memories I’ll treasure forever.
Travel reminds me that there is still beauty in the world.
Still wonder.
Still magic.
It reminds me that life is meant to be experienced — not just survived.
And honestly? These are the moments that make all the hard seasons worth pushing through.
The moments where you stand beneath alpine mountains, wander through medieval streets, or stare at a fairytale castle and think:
I can’t believe this is real life.
Because for a little while… it almost doesn’t feel real at all.
