Some travel days are wonderful.
Some are memorable.
And then there are those rare days that feel almost too magical to be real.
Day five of our Germany road trip was one of those days.
If you’re planning a Bavaria itinerary and wondering whether Neuschwanstein Castle is worth visiting, the short answer is absolutely yes. After spending a full day exploring both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles, hiking to iconic viewpoints, wandering through alpine villages, and soaking in the incredible scenery surrounding Schwangau, I can confidently say it was one of the highlights of our entire Germany road trip.
Waking Up Beneath a Castle
I woke up beneath a castle.
Not metaphorically. Literally.
Our suite at Hotel Müller sat directly below Hohenschwangau Castle, and every time I stepped onto our private balcony terrace, I found myself staring upward in disbelief at the golden-yellow castle perched high above us on the hillside.
Even opening the bathroom window felt surreal. Instead of looking out at a neighboring building or parking lot, there was a castle nestled into the mountainside outside my window.
If there was ever a place designed to make you feel like you’ve stepped into a storybook, this was it.
If you’re looking for the best hotel near Neuschwanstein Castle, Hotel Müller was honestly hard to beat. Being able to walk to both castles, enjoy breakfast with castle views, and avoid the parking chaos made it one of the most convenient and magical places we stayed during our time in Germany.
The morning began with another incredible complimentary breakfast overlooking Neuschwanstein Castle in the distance. Sitting there with coffee in hand while gazing toward one of the world’s most famous castles felt almost unreal.
Outside the breakfast room windows, the tiny village of Schwangau slowly woke beneath the Bavarian Alps while Neuschwanstein stood high above it all like something imagined rather than built.

The Morning Walk to Neuschwanstein Castle
By 8:00 AM, we were out the door and beginning the uphill walk toward Neuschwanstein Castle.
One of the questions people often ask when planning a visit is whether the walk to Neuschwanstein Castle is difficult. We found it very manageable. The climb took us roughly 35–40 minutes at a relaxed pace with several stops for photos, scenic overlooks, and moments where we simply paused to admire the views.
One of the biggest advantages of staying overnight in Hohenschwangau was being able to beat the crowds.
The road was almost completely empty as we slowly made our way uphill through the peaceful Bavarian morning. No massive tour groups. No crowded pathways. No noise except birdsong, distant waterfalls, and the sound of our footsteps climbing higher into the forest.
With every turn, the anticipation grew.
Then suddenly, through the trees, we caught our first glimpse of the castle.
And it honestly felt magical.
The first peeks of Neuschwanstein through the forest almost didn’t feel real. It looked like something pulled straight from a childhood dream.
Then we reached the overlook below the castle and saw it fully for the first time.
Towering white limestone walls. Dramatic turrets. Balconies and spires rising against the Bavarian Alps.
I was completely awestruck.

Finally Seeing Neuschwanstein Castle
Neuschwanstein truly looks like a fairytale castle.
Standing beneath its soaring towers, I instantly understood why it inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.
But what overwhelmed me most wasn’t just the architecture.
It was the realization that I was finally standing beneath a castle I had dreamed about visiting since I was a little girl.
The first time I ever saw Neuschwanstein Castle was in the classic film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Ever since then, it existed in my imagination as this magical place that surely couldn’t be as beautiful in real life as it looked on screen.
I was wrong.
It was even more beautiful.
The contrast between the brilliant white stone walls and warm reddish-orange brickwork was stunning. Every turret, archway, balcony, and intricate detail looked like it belonged inside a storybook.
It was one of those rare “pinch me” moments where you almost have to remind yourself that this place is real — and that you’re actually standing there.
Before our tour began, we spent time admiring every angle of the castle from the overlook below, taking far too many photos that somehow still didn’t feel like enough.
Touring Neuschwanstein Castle
Our 9:00 AM tour began by climbing one of the castle’s towering staircases and entering the king’s chambers.
Room after room revealed extraordinary craftsmanship, imagination, and artistry.
One of the most breathtaking spaces was the grand music hall where King Ludwig II once entertained guests with theatrical performances, music, and elaborate gatherings. Rich murals stretched across the walls while ornate decorative details made the room feel more like a royal opera house than a private residence.
As we climbed additional staircases and towers, every room revealed another layer of Ludwig’s fantastical vision.
Although Neuschwanstein Castle was never fully completed before King Ludwig’s mysterious death, what exists today is absolutely breathtaking.
And even now, the mystery surrounding Ludwig’s death remains unsolved — adding yet another layer of intrigue to one of the world’s most famous castles.

Coffee, Pretzels & Castle Views
After the tour, we weren’t ready to leave just yet.
We stopped at the castle café for coffee, pretzels, and cake while sitting on the terrace overlooking Schwangau Valley, Hohenschwangau Castle, Marienbrücke Bridge, and the surrounding Bavarian mountains.
In the distance, we could even spot St. Coloman Church sitting peacefully among the rolling green fields below — a place we would later visit ourselves.
It was one of those moments where time slows down and you simply sit quietly, soaking in the realization that you’re somewhere truly extraordinary.
Marienbrücke Bridge — The Most Famous View in Bavaria
After exploring the exhibits, palace kitchens, and castle grounds, we began the semi-steep hike toward Marienbrücke Bridge.
If you’re wondering where to find the best view of Neuschwanstein Castle, Marienbrücke absolutely deserves its reputation.
The castle rises dramatically from the forested cliffs while waterfalls rush through the gorge below. It’s one of the most iconic views in all of Germany.
But honestly, some of my favorite views were found along the trail leading to the bridge itself.
At one overlook, the entire Schwangau Valley unfolded beneath us.
We could see Hohenschwangau Castle, Lake Alpsee shimmering below, rolling green countryside, St. Coloman Church in the distance, and layers of mountains stretching endlessly across Bavaria.
It was breathtaking in every direction.

Visiting Hohenschwangau Castle
Eventually, we made our way to the shuttle bus and rode back down the mountain, conveniently being dropped off directly in front of Hotel Müller.
After a short break and a few snacks, it was time for our afternoon tour of Hohenschwangau Castle.
Unlike Neuschwanstein — which feels like stepping into a dream — Hohenschwangau feels deeply lived in.
The short walk up to the castle offered beautiful views of Neuschwanstein perched dramatically above the cliffs while Lake Alpsee sparkled below.
Since we arrived early, we spent time wandering through the courtyard, admiring fountains, exploring beneath large archways, and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere before our tour began.
Inside, we explored the antechambers, viewed historical artifacts, and learned more about the Wittelsbach family and King Ludwig II’s childhood.
Seeing the castle where Ludwig grew up added so much emotional depth to our visit to Neuschwanstein.
Many visitors only tour Neuschwanstein Castle, but I would absolutely recommend doing both.
While Neuschwanstein delivers the iconic fairytale experience, Hohenschwangau provides the history, humanity, and context that bring King Ludwig II’s story fully to life.
Together, they create one of the most memorable castle experiences in Germany.

The Details That Stayed With Me
The interiors of Hohenschwangau were incredibly ornate and beautiful.
Painted ceilings stretched overhead while richly decorated rooms, tapestries, and intricate furnishings filled every space.
One display that unexpectedly fascinated me was a loaf of bread over one hundred years old preserved behind glass.
Strange? Absolutely.
But somehow oddly captivating.
One of my favorite rooms featured vivid blue wall coverings accented with peacock motifs and elaborate details unlike anything else we’d seen throughout the day.
Every room felt like a feast for the eyes.

Hidden Gardens, Alpine Churches & Bavarian Scenery
After the tour, we wandered through the castle gardens and discovered one of the most unique hidden features on the property — a striking red glass doorway tucked beneath the castle leading into a hidden grotto garden.
The views from the grounds were incredible.
Neuschwanstein stood proudly across the valley while Lake Alpsee sparkled below beneath the surrounding mountains.
Before heading back into town, we stopped by the charming Christ the King Chapel nearby before driving toward St. Coloman Church — one of Bavaria’s most photographed churches.
Standing there surrounded by rolling green meadows with the Bavarian Alps towering behind it felt like stepping into a postcard.
The scenery didn’t even look real.
From there, we continued toward Füssen and stopped at Lechfall along the Lech River where rushing turquoise water cut through the alpine landscape.
After the grandeur of the castles, the peaceful atmosphere along the river felt grounding and calming.

Ending the Day Beside Lake Alpsee
As evening approached, we returned to Hohenschwangau and wandered near Lake Alpsee while the surrounding mountains reflected beautifully across the calm water.
For dinner, we headed to Bräustüberl — the historic old stables restaurant in Schwangau — where we enjoyed traditional German food while reflecting on everything we had experienced that day.
As the sun slowly disappeared behind the mountains, Neuschwanstein Castle began glowing with soft pink light high above the valley.
It was breathtaking.
The perfect ending to a real-life fairytale day in Bavaria.

Is Neuschwanstein Castle Worth Visiting?
Without question — yes.
This is one of the most frequently searched questions about Bavaria, and after finally visiting, I can confidently say Neuschwanstein Castle exceeded every expectation I had.
Between the stunning architecture, incredible mountain scenery, fascinating history of King Ludwig II, peaceful alpine landscapes, and iconic views from Marienbrücke Bridge, it remains one of the most magical places I’ve ever visited in Europe.
And if you’re planning a Bavaria itinerary and wondering whether it’s worth visiting both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles in the same day, I highly recommend doing both.
