After the tour, we weren’t ready to leave just yet.

We stopped at the castle café for coffee, pretzels, and cake while sitting on the terrace overlooking Schwangau Valley, Hohenschwangau Castle, Marienbrücke Bridge, and the surrounding Bavarian mountains.

In the distance, we could even spot St. Coloman Church sitting peacefully among the rolling green fields below — a place we would later visit ourselves.

It was one of those moments where time slows down and you simply sit quietly, soaking in the realization that you’re somewhere truly extraordinary.

Marienbrücke Bridge — The Most Famous View in Bavaria

After exploring the exhibits, palace kitchens, and castle grounds, we began the semi-steep hike toward Marienbrücke Bridge.

The short walk up to the castle offered beautiful views of Neuschwanstein perched dramatically above the cliffs while Lake Alpsee sparkled below.

Since we arrived early, we spent time wandering through the courtyard, admiring fountains, exploring beneath large archways, and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere before our tour began.

Inside, we explored the antechambers, viewed historical artifacts, and learned more about the Wittelsbach family and King Ludwig II’s childhood.

Seeing the castle where Ludwig grew up added so much emotional depth to our visit to Neuschwanstein.

The Details That Stayed With Me

The interiors of Hohenschwangau were incredibly ornate and beautiful.

Painted ceilings stretched overhead while richly decorated rooms, tapestries, and intricate furnishings filled every space.

One display that unexpectedly fascinated me was a loaf of bread over one hundred years old preserved behind glass.

Strange? Absolutely.

But somehow oddly captivating.

One of my favorite rooms featured vivid blue wall coverings accented with peacock motifs and elaborate details unlike anything else we’d seen throughout the day.

Every room felt like a feast for the eyes.

Hidden Gardens, Alpine Churches & Bavarian Scenery

After the tour, we wandered through the castle gardens and discovered one of the most unique hidden features on the property — a striking red glass doorway tucked beneath the castle leading into a hidden grotto garden.

The views from the grounds were incredible.

Neuschwanstein stood proudly across the valley while Lake Alpsee sparkled below beneath the surrounding mountains.

Before heading back into town, we stopped by the charming Christ the King Chapel nearby before driving toward St. Coloman Church — one of Bavaria’s most photographed churches.

Standing there surrounded by rolling green meadows with the Bavarian Alps towering behind it felt like stepping into a postcard.

The scenery didn’t even look real.

From there, we continued toward Füssen and stopped at Lechfall along the Lech River where rushing turquoise water cut through the alpine landscape.

Ending the Day Beside Lake Alpsee

As evening approached, we returned to Hohenschwangau and wandered near Lake Alpsee while the surrounding mountains reflected beautifully across the calm water.

For dinner, we headed to Bräustüberl — the historic old stables restaurant in Schwangau — where we enjoyed traditional German food while reflecting on everything we had experienced that day.

As the sun slowly disappeared behind the mountains, Neuschwanstein Castle began glowing with soft pink light high above the valley.

It was breathtaking.
